WELCOME TO POTSDAM
We love a town with history, culture, and the great outdoors, and Potsdam fits the bill. Like a magnet, people are drawn to Potsdam for a variety of reasons, including educational opportunities, sports games, musical performances, theater and shopping. There’s an exuberance here that’s hard to find in other small towns.
Potsdam is surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains to the east and farmland to the north, south and west. There’s an earthiness from the woods, waters and fields that melds with the finer living of cultural activities, each earning its place in our hearts, each giving us a unique spiritual experience.
Potsdam’s roots in agriculture are evident by the abundance of local farms and the fresh produce available in the spring, summer and fall. Yet the heart and soul of this village can be found in its educational heritage. A great cultural exchange has been occurring here since the founding of St. Lawrence Academy (now SUNY Potsdam) in 1816. Ideas are shared. Dreams fulfilled. Creativity flows freely through the college hallways, classrooms and dormitories.
Things get done in Potsdam. Degrees are earned, careers groomed, hockey games won. This is a hub for commerce. It is a place to build, both personally and professionally. And, when the work is done, Potsdam can help heal the mind and body.
With its proximity to Canada, the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park and the Thousand Islands, Potsdam is the perfect base camp for adventure, sightseeing and R&R.
Stick around and enjoy the quiet summer months. Paddle on the Raquette River. Hike the trails east of Sunday Rock. Enjoy an outdoor concert on the Norwood Village Green. Write poetry at the gazebo in Ives Park. Pick your own fresh food at the Potsdam Farmers’ Market. Watch a St. Lawrence River sunset in Waddington.
Whether you choose to live here, study here, or simply visit, we hope you enjoy your stay in the Town of Potsdam.
