WELCOME TO SARANAC LAKE
Long before Saranac Lake was incorporated as a village in 1892, it had become famous for its Adirondack guides, who were founts of information for visitors to this region. These colorful, lusty woodsmen knew (and were never loath to say) in which streams the trout were jumping, under which logs the biggest bass lurked, and over what hills the fleetest deer could be sighted.
They knew precisely how to make meaningful a sojourn amid the natural beauty that lies so close to this Adirondack town.
Saranac Lake’s early history as a health resort has accustomed it to welcoming visitors from across the globe. Many have sought health and year-round recreation in its fine climate. Others have come as medical researchers and college students. Conventioneers are grateful for the recreational interludes provided by Saranac Lake’s proximity to woods, streams and golf courses. Tourists return year after year.
Many who came as visitors liked what they found and stayed to establish residence in this most cosmopolitan of small towns. The truly native families, largely of New England or French-Canadian ancestry, add their sturdy character and wry humor to the blend.
Saranac Lake is located along the Olympic Scenic Byway, featuring things to see and do along state routes 3, 86 and 9N. In 1995, Saranac Lake was ranked No. 1 among small towns in New York state and 11th in the U.S., and in 1998 the prestigious All-America City status was bestowed upon the village by the National Civic League. In 2006, The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Saranac Lake as one of America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations, an annual list of unique and lovingly preserved U.S. communities. The following pages will provide some of the reasons why.
We hope you enjoy your stay in the Saranac Lake region.
